California Summer Camps - Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camps

"I don't think I could keep him away if I tried. In fact, can a camper do a three or four week program? [Our son's] only regret this year was that he didn't contact us to ask for an extra week..." - Cheryl Myers (parent), Lompoc, CA

Windsurfing

Overview.

Windsurfing is just one of many activities you'll enjoy at Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camps. Our windsurfing program is for kids 8 to 17 and is structured to provide you with a fun introduction to the sport and to give you an opportunity to practice on some beautiful mountain lakes.

Skills Development.

If you haven't been windsurfing before, you'll receive a basic introduction to the board and its the various components. You'll practice on Wind Glider brand windsurfers, which have smaller sails and inflatable boards that are much broader than other sail boards, making it easier to balance and learn. You'll receive tips on basic windsurfing theory and techniques. Like sailing, a proper windsurfing instructional program would take longer than a session at Camp, so our program is structured as an introduction to the sport giving you time on the water with a staff member rather than as an "instructional" program.

Lakes.

You'll go windsurfing at Packer Lake and, if you attend a session of at least two weeks, also at Donner Lake.

Packer Lake.

The Camp is located just 10 minutes from the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, where Packer Lake is located. It's a beautiful, sheltered lake with gentle winds ideal for learning the sport.

Donner Lake.

During our two-week sessions, we'll also spend a day at Donner Lake. The lake is larger with more room to roam and has a beach fun for after-windsurfing activities as well.

Quote of the Day:

"You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance." – Franklin P. Jones
