California Summer Camps - Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camps
"This was [our son's] first time at camp. He felt welcomed and was able to try a variety of new things, such as Archery, Horseback riding, Rope Courses etc." - Bess McKay (parent), Rohnert Park, CA
Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is just one of the many activities you'll enjoy at Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camp.
You can join our Specialized Equestrian Program Track or you can simply go on a couple trail rides.
Specialized Equestrian Program Track
You can go horseback riding without enrolling in this specialized program track, but if you've been bitten by the bug and can't get enough of horses, this 20-hour program is for you! It is meant for people looking for an overnight horse camp but would also like to do some other great activities in addition to riding horses.
The program provides beginning to intermediate western riding instruction with professional wranglera, trail rides, and basic horse and equipment care. Enrollment in this program will still allow time to participate in some of the Camp's other activities.
The horseback riding program track is only offered twice, once between June 28 - July 9 and once between July 26 - August 6.
Due to the intensive nature of instruction, there is a minimum enrollment requirement of 5 and a maximum enrollment requirement of 10. Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis (i.e., when the camper signed up for the specialized program track). At just $24.75/hour of instruction, this program is priced substantially below comparable lessons.
Trail Rides
You can choose between two different horseback trail rides, which are offered as optional activities. (There is an additional charge for optional activities.) You can choose a 1-1/2 hour trail ride. This ride meanders through some beautiful pine forests and rolling hills. Or, if you sign up for a session of 2 weeks or longer, you can choose to go on a 2-1/2 hour trail ride, which is out of Gold Lake in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area. On this ride, you'll loop around splendid lakes and take in some terrific views.
All rides are led by professional wranglers and are an excellent way for you to get an introduction to riding horses. And if you're an experienced rider, you'll get some relaxing time on a horse and the opportunity to see some beautiful countryside.
