Jobs and Employment - Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camps
Counselors and Activity Specialists
Overview
Shaffer's High Sierra Camp offers children 8 to 17 a traditional summer camp experience but with a focus on noncompetitive wilderness adventure activities in California's splendid Tahoe National Forest. (Go to our Home page to read more.) We're positioned somewhere between a posh traditional camp and a wilderness survival camp.
This year, we'll need about 16 counselors and activity specialists. Because our Camp is small with about 70 or fewer campers per week, our counselors double as activity specialists and activity specialists also act as counselors. Versatility is a virtue and you are likely to be asked to facilitate more than one activity area.
Openings
As of March 1, 2010, we have the following opentings:
- Mountain Biking Specialist
- Outdoor Education Specialist
- Rock Climbing Specialist
- Ropes Course Specialist
- Waterfront Specialist
Training
All counselors and activity specialists go through an intense six to seven days of training immediately before camp begins (June 13 - 19, 2010), where we cover everything you need to know from clinics on how to conduct a particular activity to behavior management. Lake Front and rock climbing staff arrive a day earlier (June 14, 2008) than other program staff to go through an additional day of training and testing. First aid and CPR certification is not given at Camp, and you must have those certifications in hand before arriving.
Dates
We will operate 8 weeks of children's camp, from June 20 through August 14, 2010
Pay
Salary ranges between $275 and $325 per week, depending on experience, skill, and certifications. Program staff get paid for the training period, and we do not deduct for room or board.
Requirements
We’re looking for men and women who have the maturity and judgment to be responsible for children and put the child’s needs above their own, who are fun and have great senses of humor, who can be crazy, who can put in long days but still keep a positive attitude, and who want to make a difference in a child’s life.
Many program staff must have current CPR and basic first aid certifications, which they are responsible for obtaining before camp. (Even if such certifications are not required, they give you an advantage over people without such certifications.) Some positions require higher levels of first aid due to the remoteness of some activities. Still other positions may have additional requirements.
