California Summer Camps - Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camps

"Our 11 year old daughter really enjoyed the variety of activities and the opportunity to challenge herself with some new skills. She also made some good friends. Her counselors were really great." - Caryn Lesko (parent), Oakland, CA

Program & Goals.

Shaffer's High Sierra Summer Camp provides a summer camp program with a focus on noncompetitive, team-oriented wilderness adventure activities. Our goal is for campers to have a safe and fun time, make friends, and build self-confidence by conquering challenges that they set for themselves and developing new skills, all while gaining an appreciation of nature.

Program Philosophy.

The Camp subscribes to the "Challenge-by-Choice" philosophy. For instance, if a camper chooses mountain biking, s/he can choose easy rides, s/he can advance to intermediate rides, or s/he can pursue his or her interest all the way to our "black diamond" advanced 14 mile ride with a 4,000 foot vertical drop. The camper provides the interest and the Camp provides the encouragement and support. The Camp focuses on noncompetitive, team-oriented activities because we believe this helps foster a sense of community and of belonging, which in turn helps build friendships and encourages campers to stretch and try new experiences.

Activity Selection.

With the exception of horseback riding, the river float trip, and whitewater rafting, campers sign up for activities the day before the activity. That way, campers can pursue their interests and can schedule activities to be with friends. Because we use professional outfitters for horseback riding and whitewater rafting, and rents rafts for the float trip, the Camp must confirm a camper's desire to go on these activities two days before the activity.

Activities.

Some of the activities offered by the Camp include the following. You can follow the links to read more about each activity.

Archery Challenge Ropes Course Mountain Biking Rock Climbing
Arts & Crafts Horseback Riding Mountain Boarding Whitewater Rafting
Backpacking Hiking Performing Arts Windsurfing

Safety.

All activities are conducted within the guidelines for staffing ratios and safety protocols established by the American Camp Association. All program staff undergo a rigorous week of training by the Camp and groups venturing off Camp property have at least one staff member who holds at a minimum basic first aid and CPR certifications, and some hold more advanced first aid certifications, depending on the activity.
